Financial Independence Guide

What is Financial Independence?

Financial independence is the point where your investments generate enough income to cover your living expenses, making work optional.

The core idea

Financial independence (FI) means your portfolio produces enough passive income — through dividends, interest, and safe withdrawals — to fund your lifestyle indefinitely. Once you reach FI, employment becomes a choice rather than a necessity.

How it's measured

The most common benchmark is 25× your annual expenses, based on the 4% safe withdrawal rate. If you spend $40,000 per year, your FI number is approximately $1,000,000 invested in a diversified portfolio.

Why it matters

FI provides optionality: the freedom to change careers, take sabbaticals, start a business, or retire fully. It's less about never working again and more about controlling how you spend your time.
